Custom BusinessPlus Reports
BusinessPlus gives your district over 400 built-in reports. When those aren’t enough — when you need data in a specific format, combining modules. BusinessPlus doesn’t link together, or delivered automatically on a schedule — that’s where ReportingGuru comes in.
What is BusinessPlus?
BusinessPlus is PowerSchool’s ERP platform built specifically for K12 school districts. It handles finance, payroll, HR, purchasing, budgeting, fund accounting, and grants management in a single system. Districts use it to manage everything from purchase requisitions and vendor payments to teacher contracts and state compliance reporting. It was formerly known as eFinancePlus before becoming part of the PowerSchool family.
Can you build custom reports for BusinessPlus?
Yes. ReportingGuru builds custom reports directly connected to the BusinessPlus database — pulling data from finance, payroll, HR, purchasing, and fund accounting modules into SSRS reports, Crystal Reports, Power BI dashboards, and Excel-based outputs that BusinessPlus’s built-in report library cannot produce.

The Problem BusinessPlus Users Run Into
BusinessPlus is a solid system for K-12 district finance and HR operations. The built-in report library covers a lot of ground — budget reports, payroll summaries, AP aging, purchasing activity, fund balances, position control. For standard reporting needs, it does the job.
But school districts run into the same walls with BusinessPlus that organizations run into with every ERP:
The report exists, but not in the format the superintendent or school board needs to see it. The data is there, but pulling together payroll, benefits, and position budget information into a single management view requires exporting three separate reports and manually combining them in Excel. The finance team needs a budget-to-actual variance report that shows encumbrances, actuals, and remaining budget by department — but BusinessPlus’s built-in output doesn’t arrange it the way the CFO reviews it. The district needs a custom report for a state compliance submission that doesn’t match any of the 400+ pre-built templates. Or someone spends two hours every Friday manually assembling a cash position summary from multiple BusinessPlus screens that should just be one automated report.
These are exactly the situations ReportingGuru was built for.
We connect directly to the BusinessPlus database, build the reports your district actually needs, and deliver them automatically — so your finance team spends less time wrestling with the reporting system and more time using the information it produces.
Tell Us About Your Financial Reporting Workflow
What We Build for BusinessPlus Districts
Custom Finance and GL Reports
Fund accounting reports, general ledger detail and summary by fund and cost center, budget-to-actual variance reports with encumbrance and actual detail, multi-fund financial summaries for board presentations, and year-end closing reports formatted the way your auditors want to see them.
Budget Reports
Custom budget summary and detail reports by department, program, school, and fund — with original budget, adopted amendments, current budget, encumbrances, expenditures to date, and remaining balance in a single view. Reports formatted specifically for board meetings, finance committee presentations, and state submission requirements.
Payroll Reports
Custom payroll registers, deduction summaries, benefit cost reports, overtime analysis, substitute cost tracking, and year-end W-2 reconciliation reports. Position-level payroll cost reports that show salary, benefits, and total compensation by employee, department, or school — combined into a single report that BusinessPlus doesn't produce natively.
Purchasing and AP Reports
Custom purchase order status reports showing open POs, encumbrances, receiving status, and remaining commitment. Vendor spend analysis by vendor, category, and budget year. Custom AP aging reports. Requisition approval cycle time reports that show where purchasing requests are getting stuck in the workflow.
HR and Position Control Reports
Custom reports combining HR, position budget, and actual payroll data — vacancy reports, position fill rates, compensation analysis, benefit enrollment summaries, and employee tenure reports. Reports that cross the boundary between the HR module and the finance module in a way BusinessPlus's built-in reports typically don't.
Grants and Fund Tracking
Custom grant expenditure reports tracking actual spending against grant budgets, remaining grant balances, and encumbered amounts by fund and grant code. Multi-grant summary reports for federal and state reporting. Year-end grant close-out support reports.
Cash and Accounts Reports
Custom cash position summaries across all bank accounts and funds. Cash receipts detail reports. Reconciliation support reports bridging BusinessPlus records to bank statements. Accounts receivable aging for district billing activity.
State Compliance and Regulatory Reports
When your state requires a specific financial data submission that doesn't match any BusinessPlus pre-built report, we build it. We've built state compliance reports for districts across multiple states, working directly from the required submission format.
Board and Superintendent Dashboards
Power BI dashboards that give district leadership — CFO, superintendent, and board members — a real-time view of budget status, payroll costs, purchasing activity, and fund balances. Formatted for non-finance audiences. Refreshed automatically. No ERP login required.
Who We've Helped
ReportingGuru has worked with K-12 school districts of all sizes — from small rural districts with a two-person finance team to large urban districts with complex multi-fund structures, federal grant portfolios, and hundreds of cost centers.
Common situations where districts bring us in:
- The district’s finance director needs a weekly budget status report by department that
- BusinessPlus can’t produce in a usable format
- State audit prep requires financial data assembled in a specific layout the built-in reports don’t match
- The board asks for a monthly financial dashboard and the current process is manually building a PowerPoint every month
- HR needs a report combining position control, filled positions, vacancies, and salary data that spans two different BusinessPlus modules
- The district is close to year-end and needs custom reports for the auditors quickly
- A grant manager needs to track spending against a federal award in real time, not from a monthly batch report
- If your situation sounds like any of these, we can help.
What Working With Us Looks Like
We keep it straightforward.
You tell us what you need — what data you’re trying to see, who the audience is, and what the current process looks like. We ask a few questions about your BusinessPlus setup and database access. We give you an honest estimate of what it takes to build.
We don’t require retainers. We don’t ask for money upfront. We don’t have minimums. You can start with one report and see how it goes.
Most districts start with one or two urgent reports — the board presentation budget report, the state submission that’s due, the payroll cost analysis the superintendent keeps asking for — and then keep coming back for additional reports as they realize how much time the automation saves.
We’re US-based, we respond quickly, and we know our way around a K-12 finance database.
How We Connect to BusinessPlus
BusinessPlus stores its data in a SQL Server database. We
connect directly to that database — with read-only access, using views and
stored procedures that don’t touch or alter any transactional data — and build
the reports on top of it.
The reporting output options depend on what your district already has:
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
Crystal Reports
Power BI
Excel
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ReportingGuru have experience specifically with BusinessPlus (formerly eFinancePlus)?
Yes. We have worked with BusinessPlus districts and are familiar with its database structure, the relationship between its finance, payroll, HR, and purchasing modules, and the typical reporting gaps that K-12 districts encounter. Whether you’re on an older eFinancePlus version or the current PowerSchool BusinessPlus platform, we can connect to it and build what you need.
Can you modify existing BusinessPlus built-in reports?
Yes. If an existing BusinessPlus report is close to what you need but not quite right — wrong format, missing fields, wrong grouping — we can modify it. For Crystal Reports-based BusinessPlus outputs specifically, we can take the existing template and adjust it rather than rebuilding from scratch, which saves time.
Do we need IT involvement to get started?
You’ll need your district’s IT team or database administrator to set up read-only database access for our team. That’s typically a straightforward step. Beyond that, we work directly with the finance team on requirements and don’t need ongoing IT involvement for most report development.
How long does it take to build a custom BusinessPlus report?
A single, well-scoped report typically takes 1–2 weeks from requirements to delivery, sometimes faster. More complex reports combining multiple modules, or projects involving a full set of reports for board presentations or audit prep, take longer and we’ll scope that honestly before we start.
What if our BusinessPlus data has quality issues?
BusinessPlus data quality issues — inconsistent coding, missing fund assignments, unbalanced encumbrances — are common, especially in districts that have been running the system for many years. We identify data issues during the development process and work with your team to address them. A report built on bad data isn’t useful, so we don’t skip this step.
Can you build reports that combine BusinessPlus data with data from other district systems?
Yes. We regularly build reports that pull from BusinessPlus alongside data from other systems — student information systems, third-party payroll processors, external HR platforms — using SQL Server as the integration layer. If the data exists in a database or structured file, we can incorporate it.
