Viewpoint Vista vs. Viewpoint Spectrum: The Key Differences
Before diving into reporting specifics, the core product distinction matters:
Viewpoint Vista is the on-premises construction ERP — a Windows-based application with a SQL Server database backend. Viewpoint Spectrum (formerly Dexter + Chaney) is Trimble’s cloud-based construction management platform — designed for contractors who want a browser-based, hosted solution rather than an on-premises installation. Spectrum handles accounting, job cost, project management, service management, payroll, and equipment management in a cloud environment. Its reporting is built around Crystal Reports and Info-Link (Spectrum’s proprietary data export tool).

Viewpoint Vista Reporting: What’s Built In and What Requires Custom Work
Vista’s Built-In Reporting Tools
Viewpoint Vista includes three reporting mechanisms:
SSRS-Based Vista Reports Vista’s primary formatted report output uses SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) — since Vista runs on SQL Server, SSRS is the natural report generation layer. Many of Vista’s standard reports are SSRS .rdl files deployed within the
Vista application. This is significant because it means custom SSRS reports can be built on Vista data using the same infrastructure Vista itself uses.
Crystal Reports in Vista Vista also uses Crystal Reports for certain formatted document outputs — particularly customer-facing documents, subcontractor forms, and some operational reports. Crystal Reports .rpt files are deployed within Vista’s report printing framework and appear to users as standard Vista reports.
Vista Report Scheduling Vista doesn’t natively schedule report jobs the way SSRS subscriptions do — tools like Logicity and Windows Task Scheduler can be used to run .rpt files and export results as PDFs or Excel files— but this is a workaround, not a native scheduling solution. For true automated scheduled delivery, SSRS subscriptions configured directly on the Vista SQL Server database are more reliable.
What Vista Users Need Custom Help With
Job Cost Reports in the Format Management Actually Uses Vista’s native job cost reports show job cost data — but construction leadership needs job cost presented in a specific format: original contract, approved change orders, revised contract, costs to date by cost type, committed costs, projected cost at completion, projected margin. This is the standard construction job cost summary format that no Vista standard report produces exactly right. Every general contractor we work with has a custom version of this report built to their specific format.
WIP Schedules for Bonding and Lenders The WIP (Work in Progress) schedule is the most important financial document a construction company produces for surety bonding and lender reporting. It requires combining contract values, costs to date, estimated cost to complete, billings to date, and over/under billing calculations across every active job. Vista has the raw data for all of this — it does not produce a formatted, GL-reconciled WIP schedule in the format bonding agents and lenders require.
Subcontractor Compliance Reports Tracking insurance certificates, lien waivers, certified payroll compliance, and subcontract commitment vs. paid amounts across dozens or hundreds of subcontractors requires reports that cross Vista’s AP, subcontract, and project modules simultaneously. These multi-module compliance reports are custom development work.
Owner Billing Formats (AIA, T&M, Unit Price) Construction billing in Vista covers AIA G702/G703 applications for payment, time-and-material billing, and unit price billing. While Vista has billing functionality, the formatted output often needs to match exactly what the owner’s contract requires — specific line item groupings, retainage calculations presented a particular way, supporting documentation attached. Custom SSRS or Crystal Reports billing templates are the standard solution.
Automated Delivery to Project Managers and Executives The most common request we get from Vista users: “Can we make this report email itself automatically every Monday?” Vista’s native scheduling workarounds (Logicity, Task Scheduler) require maintenance and are fragile. SSRS subscriptions configured directly on the Vista SQL Server database generate and deliver reports automatically and reliably — no one has to run them, no one has to email them.

Because Vista runs on SQL Server, it has the broadest custom reporting ecosystem of any construction ERP. Every tool that connects to SQL Server — SSRS, Power BI, Crystal Reports, Excel via Power Query — can connect directly to the Vista database with read-only access. This means:

These reports are easy to export into PDF, Excel, or CSV format, making them versatile for internal meetings or external audits.
Crystal Reports in Spectrum Spectrum uses Crystal Reports and InfoLink for its advanced reporting capabilities. Crystal Reports is Spectrum’s primary custom report development tool — the same Crystal Reports .rpt files used in many other ERPs, connected to Spectrum’s database through Crystal’s connection drivers.
Info-Link Info-Link is Spectrum’s proprietary data access tool — it provides a simplified, field-labeled view of Spectrum’s database that business users can query without knowing the underlying table structure. It’s useful for basic data exports and simple report building, but its flexibility is limited compared to writing SQL directly against the Spectrum database.
Where Spectrum Reporting Falls Short
Cloud Architecture Complicates Direct Database Access Spectrum’s cloud deployment means direct database access is not as straightforward as Vista’s on-premises SQL Server. Crystal Reports connects to Spectrum through Spectrum’s ODBC driver — which works but requires specific configuration and has performance considerations for complex reports on large datasets.
Crystal Reports Expertise Is Increasingly Scarce Spectrum’s dependence on Crystal Reports for custom development creates a staffing challenge — Crystal Reports development expertise is increasingly difficult to find as SAP has deemphasized the product. Construction companies on Spectrum that need custom Crystal
Reports built or modified face a shrinking pool of developers who know both Crystal Reports and Spectrum’s database structure.
Info-Link Is Not a Report Builder Info-Link handles data exports well. It does not produce formatted, professional reports — formatted AIA billing documents, branded job cost summaries, or print-ready financial packages. That output requires Crystal Reports development.
No Native Scheduled Delivery Like Vista, Spectrum does not have a robust native mechanism for scheduled automated report delivery. Crystal Reports files can be scheduled externally, but this requires configuration and maintenance outside Spectrum itself.

When to Bring In Outside Viewpoint Reporting Help
Based on the Vista and Spectrum reporting situations we encounter, here is the honest trigger list:
Your Vista or Spectrum reports broke after an upgrade. Version upgrades frequently change database schemas or Crystal Reports runtime versions. Reports that worked in the previous version stop working or produce errors. Assessment and repair requires someone who knows the Viewpoint database schema and the Crystal/SSRS report structure.
You need a WIP schedule or AIA billing document that matches exactly what your bonding agent or owner requires. Standard Viewpoint outputs are close but not exact. A contractor whose WIP schedule doesn’t balance to the GL, or whose AIA billing doesn’t match the owner’s required format, needs custom development — not a settings change.
Your project managers need job cost reports for their jobs automatically, without logging into Viewpoint. Parameterized SSRS reports that email each PM their own jobs’ cost detail automatically every Monday morning is a straightforward SSRS subscription configuration — but it requires building the SSRS report first.
You need executive dashboards combining Vista or Spectrum data with other systems. Combining Viewpoint job cost data with Salesforce CRM pipeline data, or with HR headcount data from a separate payroll system, requires a SQL Server integration layer and a Power BI or SSRS report layer — not something either Viewpoint product handles natively.
Your Crystal Reports are aging and you want to migrate to SSRS. For Vista users specifically, migrating Crystal Reports to SSRS makes sense because Vista already runs SSRS natively — the infrastructure is already there, and SSRS’s automated delivery is significantly better than Crystal’s external scheduling workarounds.
The Construction Reports Every Viewpoint Contractor Needs
These are the custom reports that construction companies using Vista and Spectrum consistently need and consistently find that the standard report library doesn’t produce correctly:
